Ingredients

  • 2 slices sandwich bread, sourdough, or country bread
  • 1 to 1 1/2 ounces sliced cheddar, American, Monterey Jack, or mozzarella
  • 1 teaspoon softened butter, or 1 teaspoon mayonnaise
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon grated Parmesan for the outside
  • Optional: thin tomato slices, roasted red pepper, or baby spinach, patted dry
  • Optional for serving: tomato soup, pickles, or a small salad

Equipment

  • air fryer
  • butter knife or small spatula
  • thin spatula or tongs
  • toothpick or small air-fryer-safe rack, optional
  • cutting board

Method

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (182°C) for 3 minutes.
  2. Spread a thin layer of softened butter or mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice.
  3. Place one slice coated-side down on a cutting board.
  4. Add the cheese in an even layer, keeping it just inside the bread edges.
  5. Add any optional vegetables in a very thin layer, then top with the second bread slice, coated-side up.
  6. Press gently so the sandwich holds together.
  7. Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket and secure one corner if the top slice lifts.
  8. Air fry at 360°F (182°C) for 4 minutes.
  9. Flip carefully, then cook for 2 to 4 minutes more, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  10. Rest for 1 minute, remove any toothpick, and cut in half.

Notes

Cooking time is estimated and varies by bread thickness, cheese type, and air fryer model.
This recipe does not use raw meat; cook until the cheese is fully melted and the center is hot.
Nutrition is an estimate before soup, salad, pickles, or extra add-ins.
Times and nutrition are estimates. Follow your appliance instructions and check doneness.
Never preheat with a loose parchment liner. Keep any liner secured beneath food and away from the heating element.
